Castle And Gardens Of Mey

The Queen Mother first saw what was then Barrogill Castle in 1952, while mourning the death of her husband, King George VI. Falling for its isolated charm and hearing it was to be abandoned, she decided to save it.

Having acquired the most northerly inhabited castle on the British mainland, The Queen Mother renovated and restored it and created the beautiful gardens you see today. For almost half a century she spent many happy summers here and shorter visits at other times of the year.

Visit Scotland gave The Castle and Gardens of Mey their highest award of a 5 Star quality assurance grading after their unannounced visit in September 2007, which included assessing the gardens, animal centre, gift shop and tearoom.

The Scottish Seabirds Centre

In a stunning location overlooking the sea and sandy beaches, you'll have a great day out at the Scottish Seabird Centre with its exciting Discovery Centre, Gift Shop and Cafe with open decking over the sea.

Summer is one of the best times to visit the Scottish Seabird Centre! All the seabirds are nesting, many with eggs or chicks. The famous Bass Rock gannets cover the island, described by Sir David Attenborough as "one of the wildlife wonders of the world". The puffins are enjoying the sunshine, gathering in large groups on the islands, especially in the early morning and late afternoon, giving hours of entertainment on our cameras. The penguin-like guillemots and razorbills pack tightly together on cliff ledges with their chicks and the eider ducks parade around the sandy bays with their large families of ducklings. There have also been several recent sightings of dolphins and porpoises

Tiverton Castle

Few buildings evoke such a feeling of history as venerable Tiverton Castle, which celebrated its 900th anniversary in 2006.

Originally built in 1106 by order of Henry I, and later rebuilt and much enlarged in the 13th and 14th centuries, it was once home of the powerful medieval Earls of Devon and of a Plantagenet Princess. With later additions and alterations down the centuries all periods of architecture from medieval to modern can be seen, with beautiful walled gardens within the romantic ruins.

Besieged during the English Civil War by General Sir Thomas Fairfax, it fell due to a lucky shot hitting a drawbridge chain. This was the only time in its long history that it saw battle.

Knebworth House

One of England's most beloved stately homes, Knebworth House is famous worldwide for its rock concerts and as the home of Victorian novelist Edward Bulwer Lytton - author of the words "The pen is mightier than the sword" - this beautiful gothic mansion is situated 29 miles north of London off the A1(M) at Stevenage.

There have been gardens at Knebworth House since at least the 17th Century, but the present layout dates largely from the Edwardian era. The architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, who married into the Lytton family, simplified the ornate beds and statuary of the Victorian garden with lawns and avenues of pollarded lime trees.

Popular features of the 25 acres now include a maze, the organically run walled kitchen garden, the Gertrude Jekyll Herb Garden and the Dinosaur Trail, where 72 life-sized dinosaurs can be found grazing amongst the rhododendrons and the redwoods. Exploring the woodland paths, children can learn about the T-Rex, the Woolly Mammoth and other fascinating pre-historic creatures.

Observatory Science Centre

The Observatory Science Centre is home to six historical telescopes which were left behind when the Royal Greenwich Observatory (RGO) finally closed its doors at Herstmonceux and moved to Cambridge in 1990. Under the aegis of Science Projects Ltd an extensive programme of restoration and repair of the domes and telescopes was completed in 2004 with the aid of a substantial grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Today at least 3 of the telescopes are used during open evenings for viewing with a fourth almost there! In fact the 26-inch Thompson reflector was used recently for a very special historic occasion. Click here for an account of Venetia Burney- Phair’s visit to view Pluto for the very first time after naming it in 1930 as an 11 year old school girl.

The telescopes are not only being used by the public on open evenings and special evening events, they are also used during twilight visits by schools and Scouting and Guiding groups. The centre can also be hired for private Evening Group Visits which includes viewing, weather permitting of course!

Knowsley Safari Park

Knowsley Safari Park was opened to the public in July 1971 by the 18th Earl of Derby. Then, the `safari park' concept of having visitors in cages (cars) and the animals roaming free based on the drive-through game reserves of East Africa was unique. In 1994, Edward Stanley, the 19th Earl, succeeded to the title. The estate being only 8 miles (13 km) from Liverpool city centre, Knowsley was the first safari park to be built close to a large city.

A few modifications to the original design have had to be made for safety and display reasons. The tigers and lions are now displayed in enclosures within the game reserves, and the elephants have their own paddock in the walk around section at the end of the safari drive. We also have a car friendly route around the outside of the monkey jungle for visitors who do not wish to have a close encounter with our baboons. Knowsley Safari Park has become one of Merseyside's premier leisure attractions, winning several awards for tourism and it's animal husbandry.

The Museum of the Broads

The Museum of the Broads is a registered charity which aims to bring the history of the Broads alive for locals and visitors to Norfolk.

It is open to the public throughout the summer. It is a nationally registered museum run by volunteers who welcome visitors and give them a taste of Broads’ heritage as well as conserving and restoring objects, including boats, which tell a local story.

The Museum of the Broads exists to bring to life the heritage of the Broadland waterways with imaginative interactive display areas focussing on regional history. It is concerned with the preservation and interpretation of the history of the Broads – a singular area of our country with its unique history of discovery, development and exploitation of the natural environment.

The displays represent life in the area from today’s conservation industry, back through the tourist industry of the twentieth century with its rapid development of the region, through the period when the need for fuel and food drastically shaped the landscape, remembering early settlements when East Anglia was an important capital region.

The museum’s collection includes objects which graphically represent the struggle to exploit the wealth of the land, and the use of the waterways for food, transport and leisure. There are collections of boats, brochures, sailing diaries, and boatbuilding plans. Many of the Museum's Broads boats , tools, and associated artefacts are unique.

Aldershot military museum
The story of Aldershot Military Town and the civil towns of Aldershot, Farnborough and Cove.

You can visit the John Reed Gallery, named after Brigadier John Reed who established the museum in 1984. It's in one of the only two surviving barrack bungalows built in North Camp in the 1890s. You can see the recreated barrack displays of the 1890s and 1950s, or even a married quarter living room of the 1960s. Along side hundreds of objects ranging from a hoof pick to a search light, there are also many things to do. For younger (or older!) visitors there are puzzle cubes, a training tunnel, 'feely boxes' - you can even take a 'ride' in a tank. If you dare you can also be shouted at by a drill sergeant!
